LEWD DID I LIVE/EVIL I DID DWEL

A collaborative sound & movement piece with Malinda Ray Allen. Using speaker elements from previous works (Vibrational Drum Tests) and a microphone signal passing through an array of pitch-shifters, the dancer (MRA) and operator (JPXI) manipulate the fields of feedback created by the microphone’s proximity to the various speaker cones distributed throughout the space. The abstracted and improvisational movements correspond to the unpredictable nature of the technology as the elements “talk” to one another. MRA’s movements are mapping the sonic contours of the room as JPXI monitors and manipulates the feedback levels, both coming from the microphone’s interaction with the speaker and the effects pedal chain feeding back into itself. The end result is something called “negative space music”. This piece debuted at Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens in March 2017. It was restaged at H0L0 in Ridgewood, Queens in April of that year. Followed by a third and final iteration as the opening performance for the 24- Hour Drone Festival at Basilica Hudson. NY.
